At Gippsland Veterinary Group, our experienced team performs a wide range of surgical procedures — from routine neutering to advanced orthopaedic and soft tissue operations. With modern surgical theatres, advanced anaesthetic monitoring and a highly skilled team, you can trust that your pet is in safe hands.

WHAT OUR SURGERY SERVICE INVOLVES

Our surgical services cover:

  • Routine procedures such as desexing (spay and castration)
  • Soft tissue surgery — from wound repair to brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome (BOAS) treatments such as nasal wedge resection, soft palate shortening and everted laryngeal saccule removal
  • Orthopaedic surgery — including lateral suture repair and tibial tuberosity advancement (TTA) for cruciate ligament injuries, tibial tuberosity transfer (TTT) for patellar luxation, toggle fixation for hip dislocation and fracture repairs with pinning and plating
  • Lump and tumour removal — including advanced skin flap techniques for tumours in challenging locations
  • Ophthalmic surgery — including eyelid entropion/ectropion correction, tumour removal and treatments for corneal ulcers, including Alger brush burring
  • Cancer surgery — cryotherapy, removal of skin tumours, splenectomy and resection of tumours in the liver, gastrointestinal tract and other organs, with some in-house chemotherapy options available
We tailor each surgical plan to your pet’s condition, health status and individual needs.
SIGNS YOUR PET MIGHT NEED SURGERY

SIGNS YOUR PET MIGHT NEED SURGERY

Some conditions requiring surgery are obvious, while others may be more subtle. Your pet may need surgical assessment if they have:

  • Lumps or swellings that are new or changing in size
  • Persistent lameness or difficulty moving
  • Breathing difficulties, especially in brachycephalic (short-nosed) breeds
  • Eye irritation, discharge, or visible eyelid abnormalities
  • Wounds that are deep, infected, or not healing
  • Broken bones or suspected fractures
  • Tumours or growths that are diagnosed as malignant or potentially harmful

If you are ever unsure, our veterinary team can examine your pet and advise whether surgery is the best option.

OUR APPROACH TO ANAESTHETIC SAFETY

We understand that anaesthesia can be a concern for pet owners. That’s why at GVG we have robust safety protocols in place.

  • Pre-anaesthetic blood testing — recommended for all patients, especially those aged seven years or older, to check for underlying health conditions such as liver or kidney disease
  • Tailored anaesthetic plans — using results from pre-anaesthetic tests to select the safest anaesthetic and pain relief medications for your pet
  • Intravenous fluid therapy — provided for most patients to maintain hydration, support blood pressure and allow immediate IV access if required
  • Advanced monitoring — including capnography (expired CO2), pulse oximetry (oxygen saturation), ECG (heart rhythm) and blood pressure monitoring (Doppler and oscillometric)
A qualified veterinary nurse is dedicated to monitoring your pet’s vital signs throughout the entire procedure and recovery.

PAIN RELIEF AND RECOVERY

We are committed to keeping your pet comfortable before, during and after surgery. Our pain management plan may include:

  • Local anaesthetic nerve blocks for targeted pain relief during and after surgery
  • Opioid and anti-inflammatory medications for ongoing comfort
  • Tailored post-operative care plans to ensure smooth recovery at home

We will provide you with clear post-surgery instructions and are always available to answer questions during your pet’s recovery.

SPECIALIST AND COMPLEX SURGERIES

SPECIALIST AND COMPLEX SURGERIES

While many surgeries can be performed within GVG, there are occasions when we recommend referral to a specialist surgeon - for example, some advanced orthopaedic or neurosurgical procedures. We have excellent working relationships with a number of referral centres located closer to Melbourne - this also enables us to provide seamless continuity of care post-operatively.
