SUPPORTING THE NEXT GENERATION OF VETERINARY PROFESSIONALS

SUPPORTING THE NEXT GENERATION OF VETERINARY PROFESSIONALS

At Gippsland Veterinary Group, we are passionate about helping future veterinarians and animal care professionals develop their skills and confidence. With decades of experience in mentoring students, our clinics offer a welcoming, supportive environment where you can gain real-world veterinary experience across a wide range of species and clinical situations.

Whether you are a university student working towards a veterinary degree or a high school student exploring career options, we are proud to offer opportunities that make a genuine difference in your learning journey.

VETERINARY STUDENT PLACEMENTS

We have long-standing partnerships with Charles Sturt University and the University of Melbourne veterinary schools, providing elective dairy rotations and practical placements for veterinary students.  We also welcome students from other Australian universities, as well as occasional international visitors, who are seeking diverse rural and mixed practice experience.  As a large group covering pets, livestock and horses, we offer a unique chance to develop hands-on skills in many aspects of clinical veterinary practice.

Many students choose to split their placement time, with options to focus on:

Companion animal practice
including routine consultations, orthopaedic/soft tissue surgery and varied medical cases
Production animal practice
including herd health, dairy medicine and obstetrics
Equine practice
including breeding, dentistry and advanced diagnostics

We can assist you in finding suitable accommodation for your placement, with several local options that are regularly used by students.  We also offer an accommodation assistance scheme to support students who are interested in working with companion animals in a rural setting.  A bursary of up to $600 can be claimed to assist with boarding fees during your placement with us.  Please contact us for more information.

YEAR 10 SCHOOL WORK EXPERIENCE

GVG proudly supports local high school students through our Year 10 Work Experience Program. Each year, we offer a number of week-long placements to enthusiastic students who are interested in learning more about veterinary care. This is a great opportunity to gain early exposure to the profession and understand what working in a veterinary clinic involves.

Placements are popular and fill quickly, so we recommend reaching out early to express your interest.

PART-TIME KENNEL HAND OPPORTUNITIES

For school students keen to get hands-on experience while studying, GVG also offers part-time kennel hand roles. These after-school positions are a great way to gain practical animal handling experience, assist with patient care and become part of a busy veterinary team. Many of our kennel hands have gone on to study veterinary nursing or further develop their careers within Gippsland Veterinary Group.
