Ram Management - The 4 T’s

Pre?joining ram management is critical to ensure rams are at their peak at the start of joining. Focusing on the 4 T’s approximately 8 weeks prior to joining is a good place to start.

Teeth

  • Mouth all rams to ensure there are no missing, loose, or broken teeth.

Toes

  • Ensure all rams are sound by checking for overgrown or cracked feet and trimming as required. Look for swelling that may indicate foot abscess. Treat any lameness promptly and reassess affected rams in a couple of weeks.

Tackle

  • Check for any penile or preputial injuries. Ensure the penis can be easily exteriorised from the prepuce and that there are no adhesions or signs of scarring.

Testes

  • Palpate all rams, ensuring testicles are even in size, firm and springy, and free from lumps, bumps, or adhesions. Scrotal circumference should be at least 28 cm.

If you are part of the Ovine Brucellosis Accreditation Program, bleeding rams at their pre?joining check may be a convenient option. New rams should be purchased from accredited flocks and arrive on the property at least 8 weeks prior to joining to allow time for settling in and to address any issues that may arise.

Ensure all rams are fully vaccinated. Rams require an annual booster of 6 - in - 1 (Glanvac 6) to protect against Cheesy Gland, Tetanus, Pulpy Kidney, Blackleg, Malignant Oedema, and Black Disease.

All rams should have received an early summer drench (November or December) and may require a second summer drench. If you are unsure whether a drench is needed, perform a Faecal Egg Count (FEC) and treat if counts exceed 100 epg. Use an effective short?acting drench based on Drench Test results.

Shearing rams at this time is also a good option. While rams can work effectively in wool, a heavy fleece, particularly if wet, can slow them down. Treat for lice off shears if required.

As always, if you are unsure about any aspect of pre?joining ram management, please give us a call to discuss.
